quick question that I think I already know the answer to. Are
Mastercards and Visa accepted at most places in US and Canada?

Thanks

Lionel.

Hi Lionel,

Yep, you can use Visa and Mastercard just about everywhere now, even
fast food restaurants. I'm speaking for US, as I've never been to
Canada.

Visa & MC, virtually everywhere in Canada, Amex less so. You *may* be asked
to produce ID to use your credit card in some locations, and will definitely
have to produce ID if you use your credit card at a bank for a cash advance.

[Not sure if you've going to have a car in the USA, but as a Canadian, one
hassle I've noticed fueling up in the USA is the fact that you sometimes
have to pay with a credit card at the pump before you start filling your
tank. Most pumps will accept my (non-American) Visa or Mastercard, but then
they ask for my "zip code." As a resident of Canada, I don't have an
American zip code, so then I have to walk to the booth and leave them my
credit card so they can turn on the pump. All in all a hassle. Most
stations on the Canadian side only require pre-payment late at night, so you
can fill and then pay, or, if you 'pay at the pump' with your credit card
they won't ask for your postal code.]

Cheers,

Yes for MC and V, but you will find some places do not accept AE, not that
you have one, but be forewarned.

Nope, it's a security check to make sure you didn't "find" the card and
now you're using it to steal gas. Pretty low-tech, really - If I've
"lost" my wallet then I've lost my driver's license too, which has all
this info on it.

Unless, of course, you are like Dennis and use a different address for
CC billing.
