Default I-80, continued

You all have helped me figure out what to avoid, and I really appreciate the
help. Now I'm wondering about a couple of other things (can you tell I've
never done this before?).

I'm not on a very tight schedule for getting to my destination, so I can
take a few extra days to sightsee and be a tourist if I want. And why not?

Bearing in mind I'll be travelling with a little dog, is there anything
relatively dog-friendly along the way that I should consider a "must see" ?

Also, as far as hotels/motels go... assuming I follow the advice here and
stay in the rural areas, is there any reason to book my reservations far in
advance, or can I be flexible and decide while I'm on the road where and
when I'm ready to stop? I have four AAA guidebooks here and I'll have a
cell phone, so I should be able to do a little bit of planning and info
gathering as I go along (like determining what hotels are dog friendly,
etc.). I guess maybe the real question here is whether or not it's likely
that hotels of choice would be booked up if I'm not staying in the larger
metro areas.

Thanks again for any thoughts; this is a very helpful group.

Laura

On a holiday weekend, some popular areas might be booked up. Other than
that, you usually will not have trouble finding motel rooms at the last
minute along I-80 unless you're getting in very late. If you're not getting
to the motel until after dark, you may want to call them in the morning or
the night before to check for rooms or make a reservation.
