Are you going down to Victoria or across to Nanaimo? Victoria is a
worthwhile destination, but perhaps too urban if the option is taking the
northern route for the scenery, because BC has so much incredible scenery to
offer. The biggest problem may be ferries. Check with the ferry web site for
times and whether or not you need reservations. If you are renting a car
you may want to consider doing some of the trip by bus since the fares
include the ferry and have priority boarding. Otherwise you will find
yourself paying for the ferry and waiting in line.
I did a similar loop a few years ago. We were visiting a friend in Victoria
and caught a 9 am bus to Vancouver airport where we picked up a rental car
then headed over to the Okanogan Valley, stopping for a late lunch in
Abbottsford and arriving in Vernon around 9 pm. We stayed for a few days
there and the next leg was from Vernon, up to Kamloops, across to Cache
Creek and down to Whistler, about 5 hours driving. We stayed in Whistler for
two days and then it's about two hours from Whistler to Vancouver. You're
probably looking at 3 days of long drives, giving you lots of time to stay
over along the way. I have always found accommodation at Whistler to be
easy to find, their main business being skiing, but it has been increasing
options for summer tourists. |
