| | Guest | St. Louis and Cincinnati in Feb Hi all: Business will take me to St. Louis and Cincinnati this
mid-February. I'm from the West Coast (born and bred) and have never
been in the Mid-West this time of the year. What can I do to cope with
the weather? How bad has it been?
I'll be staying at a hotel right in downtown near where I'll be
working (Westin in both locations). Only 3 days in each place, I guess
I won't be doing much of sightseeing--just want to survive the
"elements."
Thanks in advance,

I'm less than an hour from Cincinnati and we make trips there
from time to time. The weather hasn't been TOO terrible here... some
snowfall, but nothing like in Canada or New England where you can
measure the snow in feet. Temperatures have been fairly cold,
though. Expect highs in the upper 20's and low 30's (the occasional
balmy day in the low 40's), lows can be in the single digits, but
usually not below zero. Usually. :) It is not uncommon for weather
to be cold, wet and gloomy. The best we hope for this time of year is
sunny and cold. It's 28 F outside right now even as I type, and it'll
be about the same in Cincinnati.
If this is a business trip, I trust you won't be spending much
time out of doors. I second the suggestion for a warm winter coat,
layered clothing underneath, gloves, sturdy, warm shoes (waterproof is
a bonus) and a hat/scarf if you don't have a hood. If it's windy,
you'll be especially glad to cover any exposed skin, because it
really can cut like a knife sometimes. Chapstick is also recommended.
Cincinnati does have some nice restaurants, FWIW. We don't get
there as often as we'd like, and we mostly eat ethnic. I can post
some recommendations if you're interested. Otherwise, it didn't sound
like you were going to be able to get out much... Good luck surviving
your trip! ;)

As the others said, take a coat, a scarf, and a hat, layer clothing, and
hope you miss snow; not much more you can do. St Louis had ice recently
but streets should be clear, certainly by the time you get there. St
Louis could be anywhere from mid-20's to mid-50's for high. The way
things have been going, more likely the former. | |

| | Guest | St. Louis and Cincinnati in Feb Thank you all for your replies! Shopping for galoshes seems to be the
most important for me right now, because the thing I worry about the
most (in some ways more than the cold itself) is tripping on icy
pavement.
Incidentally, are there any Skyline Chili near the downtown area in
Cincinnati, say, around the Fountain Square where I'll be staying and
working? That's one thing I'd really like to try. I also heard good
things about Empress Chili. Is that one also a chain like Skyline, and
if so, any stores in that same downtown area?
Thanks,

| | Guest | St. Louis and Cincinnati in Feb There are a lot of chili places downtown. Check out Mt.Adams. There is a
good restaurant in an old pottery up on the hill.Try another Cincinnati
specialty: Goetta which is like scrapple except it is made with oats instead
of cornmeal. There is also a good place downtown that serves good corned
beef and pastrimi sandwiches.

| | Guest | St. Louis and Cincinnati in Feb Goetta. Interesting! Thank you, Tom, for your input.
By the way, I checked out the bus system of Cincinnati, and it seems
that there is a bus route that would take me from downtown to Camp
Washington Chili (Route 16, or 17). Will definitely check it out. (No
rental car--my company is going completely Dutch on these short
trips...sigh).

Yes, the museum with its OmniMax theater is a must-see. Several great
restaurants in Cincy, too. Just pray that there's not an ice storm while
you're there--with the hills, a storm can pretty much shut down the city for
a while.
