Could learn from other places: don;t build housing in/among forests,
spece them out well, have lots of maintained defensible space and have
METAL roofs. The lake Tahoe area has been doing all this as they've
managed to dodge the fire bullet for years. In fact, they won't try to
save houses that don;t have metal roofs in the event of a forest fire.

(My GF's parents are among the evacuees)

I may be wrong but from what I have heard this fire is so hot and moving so
quickly that anything in front of it explodes from the heat before the flame
hit it.

Nah

most of the houses were burnt by falling burning debris (burning leaves,
etc). Seems a lot of house destruction is hit and miss. One house is
o.k. ,the one right next to it is burnt to the ground.

Yes trees are exploding in front of the fire due to the sap which
biols and causes the tree to burst into flames.
