Default NYC, Cab Fare Penn Sta to 46th St.

You don't say if you will be traveling with baggage or with a group. Cab
prices are based on distance and waiting time. Unfortunately, both based on
the hour and the possibility of traffic tie-ups at any time, you might be
best off taking subway and walking a short distance as suggested by others.
You could also save time by doing so. I remember a trip across town in the
middle of the day where we watched people walking faster than we moved. And
the cost was outrageous because the meter moved faster than we did.

On the other hand, if you have kids or lots of luggage or a group to share
the cost or if the company is paying then ...

The actual distance is just a little over one mile. The taxi meter
should read less than $5. A tip of 75 cents to one dollar would be
adequate.

It is only my wife and myself, one carry-on, and one small wheeled bag.
Maybe we'll just walk. Is there a shuttle between Penn and Grand Central
Stations? That would be ideal. I hadn't considered the subway because of
having to deal with the tube and the metro at rush hour, I wouldn't want to
to be hauling any luggage. I've never used the NYC trains.

Oh, and please forgive my oversight, thanks to all of you for your
responses.

Don't understand why you want to go from Penn Station to
Grand Central when you are headed for 46th between 5th and 6th?
At any rate, there is no shuttle between these stations.

Another possibility, if your luggage is light, is to walk one block
West on 34th Street and get an uptown bus on 6th Avenue to
46th Street. You would need either a Metro card or exact change
in coins ($2.00 per person). That won't save you much over a
taxi, however. For two people, $4. A taxi won't be that much
more.

I would not worry too much about rush hour -- you will fit into a
train. And into a bus, also, if your bag is small. Amazing what
some people bring on buses:)

But all in all, I'd take the taxi.

The subway would be a hassle. Cost for two is $3. For a dollar or two
more you could take a taxi. It is an easy walk that would take at
least 20 minutes since the streets from 34th to where you wil be going
will be quite crowded - you are not going to be moving very fast
dragging wheeled luggage behind you.
