| | Guest | Looking for a laptop computer for travel purposes. I have seen someone use one of these and I think it has great
potentials for travelers.
Laptop computer, no need for wide screen, probably a 10" will do.
Light weight a must. No hard disk, all flash memory. Preloaded
applications such as Office. Couple of USB ports, a memory card
reader built in. Wireless capable, of course.
Can you suggest such a computer available in the US?

That's the one I saw being used. Any other brand or model?

Not all flash, and I dunno why you'd want that. I carry the Sony Vaio VGN-T350p.
10+ inch display, dvd writer and everything else you'd want in a 3-lb package,
with a 7+ hour battery life. I use it as my GPS in the car as well -- love the
large display.

Also Sony Vaio TX, with an 11.1" screen.
Even smaller, Sony Vaio UX, Samsung Q1, and Fujitsu U810, but none of
those have SSD.

That's way too high end. I am looking for one around $300.

Mainly because I want this for traveling purposes and don't really
need a hard drive that can be damaged. Plus I want a really low
priced computer, something in the $300 range. I don't need all the
bells and whistles.
300 Bucks with no bells or whistles? Check out the Pawn Shops.

Another poster suggested the eeePC, that's the one I saw being used.
It's starts at $200, but I don't know if it's available in the US.

Not a lot of alternative options at the moment. Sorry.
There's a few (much) higher priced options with HP, Apple, amongst
others... but that's outside the price range you mentioned.
Right now, the Asus Eee PC is one of the few that neatly dovetails with
the price range you mentioned. If you want something like its
functionality, then at this time, you'll need to buy it from some source.
But since the ultra-low-priced laptop market segment is starting to
get rolling, you may see something comparable within a few years, if you
can wait. | |
