tips for driving from New York to Birmingham

Hi Everybody,

My boyfriend and I will be driving back and forth from Long Island, NY
to Birmingham, Alabama for a wedding. We have no experience driving
south of Maryland and would love some tips on what to see and where to
stay. We like to see things like caverns and stay places with private
bathrooms. Besides those 2 things and a moderate budget, we're
completely open.

hmmmm....I don't know what you've been reading about the South, but all of
our h/motels these days have private bathrooms. Indoor plumbing, too.

The only places you'll find shared bathrooms is in some "Bed &
Breakfast" places (private homes), hostels (dormitory-style hotels),
and campgrounds.

Sorry, I wasn't dissing the South. Yes, that's what I meant. :-) I
don't want recommendations for B&Bs unless they have some rooms with
private bathrooms. anyone?
