He could fly into Zacatecas, and then the bus rides Zacatecas -
Guanajuato - Mexico City - Taxco - Oaxaca would each be less than 5
hours.

There is also Puebla -- I seem to remember it was only a couple hours from
Mexico City by car, and very interesting.
