Default 8 Hour layover at JFK, time to see the sights?

Hi everyone! I have an 8 Hour layover on a Friday, arriving at 11am
at JFK. I am scared to get caught in NY traffic but hate to miss the
opprotunity to show my kids some sights. I fly out international at
7pm. Someone who lives in NY told me to cab it into town, red bus
around and subway it back (if I can figure it out!). On a side note,
I would like to show them the boat tour to Statue and Ellis, even if I
gave other sights up. Any suggestions, directions very, very
welcomed! Thanks!

The place you need to go to get to (or just to see from a distance)
the Statue and Ellis is called "Battery Park".

IIRC the fare is $45 from JFK to any destination in Manhattan, so just
ask the taxi from JFK to take you all the way to Battery Park.

You won't have much time, but if you have a little more time than you
thought, Wall Street and Ground Zero are nearby, and Chinatown is not
far.

I wouldn't bother with the red bus for such a short visit. You will
need to be at the airport two hours in advance of your flight, and you
should leave plenty of time to get back to the airport (the traffic
between Manhattan and JFK can get pretty bad close to rush hour).
