Phoenix to Costa Mesa TO DOs...?

Hi all... Ive gotten some great travel advice from here in the past,
hoping for the same luck again :)

I will be ariving in PHX, AZ in early December and will travel north to
spend some time in beautiful Sedona, coming back through Jerome.

We have close friends in Costa Mesa, CA (About 5 hours from Phoenix)
and we would love to see them while we are out west.

My issue is this:

My wife and I dont care to just hit the highway and drive straight to
our destinate... we like to see things, do things, and experience the
area...

Does anyone have some great points of interest that are worth checking
out white driving from Phoenix to Costa Mesa California?

Likewise, is there anything neat and interesting to do/see in Costa
Mesa in early December?

that far? Well, i was just going by what microsoft streets and trips
says... it said from PHX airport to costa mesa is 5 hours and 22
minutes... traveling at average, legal speeds...
