"Don't rely on Garmin" - Garmin's words! you had the GPS on your shoulder, (you're not saying which GPS) I've
had a 60C on my shoulder for lots of walks and it worked just fine,
rain or shine.
I do check that the antennea sticks out over my shoulder so that only
my head is blocking part of the sky, if you have it below your shoulder
then you're already blocking quite a big part of the sky, that coupled
with water drops on the antenna (and water on you) can affect reception
pretty bad.
Did you wait until you had a decent connection before heading off?
That too can give you strange tracklogs, when I used mine in the car
about a month ago and didn't wait for a good connection before driving
off it thought (for 3 trackpoints) that I was in the mediteranian (I
wish ;) )
Sure Garmin's not going to take responsibility saying that you can use
their GPS in life threatning situations (ever read the disclaimers on
MS Windows?) but I have had situations where I was pretty glad I had my
GPS with me. As with anything you have to use your own judgement, take
a backup, take extra batteries and plan ahead.
And I don't see a tracklog as being something that could help you find
where you are or save someone's life, if you really were in trouble all
you had to do would be to hold the GPS in a better position, wait for a
good fix and you would have got your bearing to get you to safety, that
is where "you most need them" not a tracklog, that's just entertainment
for afterwards :) |
