It's a shame the station wasn't fully ready on time, though. Can't have
everything I suppose.

Would that be the bit where they had to work around running trains
rather than open fields?

No, the lack of most of the shops, the main toilets, the MML FC lounge,
and so on. I looked today and the exit round the side of the Betjeman
Arms is still a building site.

I hate to be so picky all the time, but give those poets a licence and
they over-use it. The only things directly over the rail link are the
Barlow shed, the new extension roof, and stuff even further from the
buffers than that.

I think the main criticism of him was that he came over all invisible
at precisely the time he should have been leading from the front and
communicating with the media particularly at a time when his chief
executive was on bereavement leave. Since the formation of Railtrack
and subsequently Network Rail there has been a distinct lack of people
in these organisations prepared to put their heads above the parapet
when occasion demands after the fashion of a Garnett or a Green. John
Armit was about as good as it got and he's long gone from the company.
Both Railtrack and its successor have seemed to crave as much
anonymity and lack of accountability as possible happily abdicating
responsibilty in the direction of the TOCs when a point of contact is
needed, even for issues which Railtrack/Network Rail are the sole
custodians.
