It was revived and made available for use, and provided
with screens (but no lift?) a couple of years back, but
hasn't seen much use (one train a day?) until WSMR started.

Thanks.

I've got an old Quail (1990) that shows a platform 3 but even back
then I doubt it was in regular use.

Before WSMR started using it, it used to be pressed into use when the
timetable went mammaries-up.

The only use the passenger use in the 70's was the ocasional football
special as "fans" could be escorted down the platform and along the path to
the ground without crossing any running lines, and saving a long hike
through town.
(mind you in the old division 3 you didn't get that many specials !!!!)

No, not according to Quail.

Quail shows that the line emerging from the north end of platform 3 joins
the down main Chester line *after* (north of) the point where the down main
Crewe line diverges from the down main (the latter being the through
non-platform line). So the layout doesn't physically allow it - there is no
track across from platform 3 towards Crewe. I've also looked in the old
(1990) edition of Quail, and it was like that even then.
