Default Line speeds

This question may well betray ignorance on my part, but I'm used to that!
It's fairly common here for people to talk about line speeds in various
places on the network, but it strikes me that when questions are asked on
the subject they're very often answered piecemeal. Person X will know the
answer for stretches A, B, D and F of a line but not those for stretches
C and E; that sort of thing.

Is there such a thing as a map/atlas/website/list/publication actually
showing line speeds for the network, perhaps somewhat simplified (showing
only maximum, regionalised and colour-coded? Does such a thing actually
exist, or are line speeds simply something that you have to learn as you
go along?

If you are not bothered about them being totally up to date, you can
sometimes get older / second hand versions of Sectional Appendices for a few
pounds at events such as open days, heritage railway stalls, etc. Generally,
these are much cheaper than old working or public timetables - is there
still a coach selling railway relics at SVR Bewdley - not been for a few
years, but I think they occasionally used to have old Sectional Appendices.
Also seen them at places like Barrow Hill, Llangollen Railway, etc.

Bevan

I've seen some stretches of line with line speed X for HSTs and line
speed Y for non-HSTs. Is it ever possible to have more than two
variants?

What Neil says is correct, in practice. To be really pedantic, there is only
one "line speed" properly so-called in such cases - the two higher speeds
being "Enhanced Permitted Speeds".

These are often very considerably higher than the lower speed - the Chiltern
line between Aynho and Princes Risborough springs to mind.
