Default Five new routes for England -one for Wales

I often find myself looking at pre-Beeching rail atlases or old track
beds and wondering what it must have been like when these places had
train services (before my time) and yearning to have been there.

Then I see more and more proposals such as this (and for other things
such as a British LGV) that will probably take years to come to
fruition and then I realise that it's increasingly likely that I will
probably manage to miss the bloody lot as my life span fits neatly
over the most depressing period in British railway history - what
timing!

I only caught the end of main line steam as well.

The trouble with just looking at atlases is that you also need to look at
timetables - and see just how awful were some of the services on secondary
lines.
For example, in Summer 1958 W.R. timetable Moat Lane Junction (with
connections from Aberystwyth & Welshpool) had just 2 through trains to
Brecon. You could change at Talyllyn Junction for a Brecon to Newport
service (of which there were 3 through trains per day), and change again at
Bargoed for Cardiff. From Welshpool to Cardiff took about 6½ hours. Sadly
the Brecon lines closed before I could afford to make such trips. Hardly
surprising that some services were poorly used, and were withdrawn,
sometimes before Beeching.
