The trouble with just looking at atlases is that you also need to look at
timetables - and see just how awful were some of the services on secondary
lines.
For example, in Summer 1958 W.R. timetable Moat Lane Junction (with
connections from Aberystwyth & Welshpool) had just 2 through trains to
Brecon. You could change at Talyllyn Junction for a Brecon to Newport
service (of which there were 3 through trains per day), and change again at
Bargoed for Cardiff. From Welshpool to Cardiff took about 6½ hours. Sadly
the Brecon lines closed before I could afford to make such trips. Hardly
surprising that some services were poorly used, and were withdrawn,
sometimes before Beeching.
