Yes, a citation for the claim that the public doesn't like them would
be useful.

Certain people here insist that Joe Public prefers airline seating,
BUT a Passenger Focus poll says:

60% Facing seats in opposite directions with a table
32% Airline style - rows of seats facing the same direction
8% Facing seats in opposite directions

I disagree - I do it on a partially filled train on a glance at how
the occupiers of already taken seats appear and behave. It is an
arbitrary choice and purely subjective, but it is a conscious
decision.

Not just businessmen.

An extreme example of deliberately doing this I saw last when the 31s
were working that Fridays only Bristol Brighton diagram.

4 ''top 31 bashers'' (so ''top'' their entire 31 mileage and
conversation was limited to the hadful of Fragonset machines) occupied
4 bays on departure from Brighton - and that was a very busy train on
a Friday afternoon. They each placed their over large ''Head'' bag
(thats shows how ''top'' they were - symbolic Head bags) at the
gangway end of each table, spread timetables and food all over the
rest of the table. All this was to ensure they had a bay each rather
than site all together in one bay. Meanwhile many ''normal''
passengers were standing - no one challenged them.
