| | Guest | Fun and games at Sheffield this autumn The main line between Sheffield and Chesterfield will be closed from
8th September to 13th December, continuously, due to engineers working
on Bradway tunnel.
According to an AXC train manager I spoke to recently, half of their
services will run directly over the old road between Rotherham
Masborough and Chesterfield, avoiding Sheffield, and the other half
will run via Beighton Junction and Woodhouse, reversing at the north
end of Sheffield station. No doubt EMT St. Pancras and Norwich
services will also take the latter route.
The Sheffield - Manchester route is not affected.
The diversion between Sheffield and Chesterfield normally adds about
10 or 15 minutes to journey times.

No. Norwich services will terminate at Chesterfield and restart at Sheffield
for Liverpool.

Thanks Peter. I hadn't picked up on that.

Which seems to contradict what the AXC TM told me. If there is a lack
of paths at the north end of Sheffield station, as Peter Fox has
posted, then I think I prefer to believe the TM's version.
Incidentally, he said that the Newcastle starters/terminators would go
one way, and the Anglo-Scottish services the other, but I forget which
was which.

Peter - is this what I would refer to as Nunnery Main Line Junction,
or has the station track layout remodelling produced a new named
Junction that I wasn't aware of?

No. Sheffield North Junction is the points and crossings at the North end of
Sheffield Midland Station. A train might get past Nunnery but still not be
able to get into the station because of a conflicting move affecting the
platform that it is trying to access.
The old signalbox was known as Sheffield North Junction.

Thanks, Peter. It was much easier (but less flexible) when the station
just had up and down sides, with, IIRC, only platform 5 being
signalled for reversible working.
>The old signalbox was known as Sheffield North Junction.
I'd forgotten that. (I can remember the box, though).
