Ho Ho. I wonder if this is a repeat of the Heathrow Hole?
(And it's a bit bizarre using a satellite to locate a bus at the bottom
of a hole in the ground.)

Probably just typical 'non understanding' of GPS satellite navigation - if
the media (and the Brazilians are likely to be as bad as ours) continuously
repeat the 'fact' that GPS satellites track vehicles, rather than that
vehicles track the satellites, the layman probably believes that you can ask
the satellite system where a vehicle is...

My thoughts on looking at the pictures.
1) i don't have much faith in the location of the tower crane.
2) if it was my motor in the work compound i would be removing it if at
all possible post haste via the gates top left.
3) blokes working down the hole well they seem rather indifferent to the
fact that more lorries and dump trucks 'could' come their way from the
initial event.

Undoubtedly - but that part of the link wouldn't go via a GPS satellite -
more like normal GSM or radio. But they probably have a good idea where the
bus is to within the accuracy needed by any bus tracking set up - and height
below ground isn't usually the most accurate of GPS info anyway...
What irritates me is when statements are made along the lines of 'cars can
be tracked by GPS' when applied to road pricing etc.

See the associated "In pictures" story... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6258579.stm
....and the caption of the third picture reads:
"Emergency services are at the scene, but fears of a further collapse
are hampering rescue efforts." | |

Although it wasn't a layman, it was the VP of the transport company.
Maybe he's an accountant?

It's at the bottom of the hole!

That makes it a lot clearer what's going on. Seems to me it's like the
Gerrards Cross tunnel collapse, but "on its side". The retaining wall
didn't keep the surrounding earth at bay.
