Default Energy saving?

Having heard a few stories about train drivers being taught to save
energy whilst driving, it does strike me as odd that interier train
lights seem to be left on all night.

For example, I quite often catch late trains from Cambridge station,
and there are by then a number of 'One' and FCC trains on what
bus-people call "layover", all with all their lights left on. I realise
that there might be security issues involved, but could they not turn
at least half the lights off? Or am I missing something?

Cleaning?

The fact that no-one at One or FCC is paying for the electricity they
use, rather than an annual lump sum?

On modern unit trains, and now fitted to some older are timing systems
which leave the lights on for 20-30 minutes to allow the train or depot
crew to dispose of the unit with light available. Other systems put the
train to "half light". The instructions can vary, and security issues
can be a factor, but in general lights are, or should be, turned off.
