Default Travelling overnight

I'm not sure, but I'd have refused to pay for a new ticket. A small
excess (sounds like the difference was £6.30) maybe, but no way a new
ticket.

You should definitely demand to get that money back, and I'd say try to
get the 2nd lot of tickets back (just to prove a point) and a full
apology.

I find it very concerning that passengers are treated as abysmally as
this.

Not technically true.

Your ticket was fine for the journey as far as you could go on the
first day - no question at all about that. On ordinary tickets, you
are allowed to abandon your journey short of the final destination.

However, you were probably right to get two new tickets, because if
you had abandoned your journey and just bought a ticket for the second
day, you would have found it difficult or impossible to claim back any
difference.
