And then they will be marvellous trains - as soon as the Virgin lettering
is removed.

Voyagers are achieving reliabilty figures around 1/3 that of the
Gatwick Express Trains. This is despite the fact that the depot at
Stewarts Lane has been seriously neglected by NatEx and Central Rivers
is state of the art facility. Getting the Gatex fleet reliable is a
tribute to the staff of Stewarts Lane as they were seriously flawed
build quality wise.
I use Virgin phones, fly on Virgin planes and bought two new cars from
Virgin. But no matter what colour they're painted, they are simply not
up to the job they are meant to be doing on the routes they are
serving. When trying something new, it doesn't pay to sack all the
experts before specifying what one is going to use in the new venture.

I don't believe that.

Perhaps you mean "unreliability figures" - or are you really trying to
suggest that Voyagers are only one third as reliable as Gatwick
Express?

I'd buy a CD from a Virgin Megastore (though, as with so many of
Virgin's endeavours, I believe they're owned by someone else now). A CD
is a CD is a CD.

But there's no way I'd buy a car from Virgin Cars or a phone from
Virgin Mobile. Customer service is important in both, and my experience
of Virgin Trains (inter alia) suggests that the Virgin principle is
simply to slap a brand on it, establish a works-well-on-paper business
plan with no contingency for customer service, and expect the money to
roll in.

Richard

Believe what you want, I see the NFRIP data, Voyagers achieve around
5000mpc to 9000mpc, at the moment they are languishing around 5,500mpc.
Gatex are achieving around 24000mpc. A failure is any fault which
results in a delay of at least 5 minutes or a cancellation. Since even
Chris Gibb is appalled at the way things are working out on these
vehicles (how many engine fire's this month? 3 or 4? I have personally
been present at one, and another occurred at Starcross two days later).
Voyagers are currently the most unreliable in the "Inter City" section
of the NFRIP data. If reliability was to be measured i terms of impact
minutes (which I disagree with but allegedly that is what's coming)
then Gatex would be many more times more reliable than the Voyagers on
a per vehicle basis.

So you /do/ mean three times as unreliable then.

If it was 33% availability compared to 99%, that would be 1/3 as
reliable.

If it was 91% availability compared to 97%, that would be 3 times as
unreliable.

You've missed the point. I think that the trains are reasonably good and
that the people who go on about them are really objecting to Branson.

Availabilty is different to reliability. Availability is measured as
units available for service through a 24 hour period. Reliability is
measured as the number of incidents per 1000 miles as outlined
previously. It is possible to have a service suffering a failure but
still available for service. For example cutting out a traction motor
with a contactor failure then continue in service until nightstop. The
original problem causing a 20 minute delay whilst it is diagnosed and
isolated is a casualty, but it is still available.
