Default Lines that escaped Beeching but were closed anyway

That's correct. No bus could have served all those stations, or not
without huge diversions. Many minor roads were far too narrow. There
was a problematic crossing of the South Tyne, but once a practicable
bridge was built that solved the problem and the line was closed.

It would be interesting to find out what sort of bus service connects
Haltwhistle and Alston nowadays.

Oh, I knew that, it was a sort of rhetorical question.

Now you've found it, it's notable that there are no through buses from
Haltwhistle station to Alston OVV - you have to change.

I like the idea of travelling with Wright Bros, though.....

I suspect that when the train ran, quite a proportion of passengers were
travelling to/from Carlisle, Hexham, or Newcastle - there were no through
trains to/from Alston - you had to change at Haltwhistle (which I always
thought was an entirely appropriate name for a station). There are through
buses between Alston and these places.
