but it isn't VWC';s idea, it was the SRA's decision, prompted, I would
imagine, by pressure from the Welsh assembly for a seemingly prestige
train.

Everything points to the DfT sanctioning the use of the spare 9-car 222s,
releasing the 390 for service to Liverpool

They certainly do, as this is now the principal fast service between
Manchester and Crewe; nearly all Virgin trains of both breeds go via
Macclesfield now.

Only certain cars would run out of fuel - those that were topped up
would continue running, so the unit would not be a total failure.

However, I'm sure that a 222 running on just over half-power would not
be welcome on the WCML (and certain passenger features, such as the
kitchen, would be unavailable)!

I'd wager all works smoothly on november 24. Virgin are apparently
hosting a press trip to Holyhead for journalists.

Maybe it's a deliberate ploy to win over the Dept of Trainsport to get
the MML 222s?

C'mon! The journalists won't be on that train - they'd have to get up
far too early! ;-)
