The new line is standard gauge, but the original line to Alice wasn't -
can't remember what gauge it was OTOMH. The train is named the Ghan in
recognition of the Afghans who came to Australia with their camels to help
open up the harsh interior.

I am aware of that fact regards gauge. Think the old series of Great
train journeys series1 on BBC1 covered that matter. That was what made
me eventually go. Just as a matter of interest does anyone know IF one
can get hold of any progs. from that series. I did look into this a few
years back but got nowhere
The diesels in use by the time I got there were second generation. What
I really found nice was the bar car in the formation.
I also have see camels in Alice Springs, and seen video of the yearly
camel races. It has been stated in the past that camels have been
shipped out to Mid East to cross breed with local stock. The native
stock of Auz betters the ensuing progeny. Camels that is

All passengers on The Ghan used to get a wash bag containing the usual
soap etc. but it had a camel and train logo on the outside: still in
the wardrobe somewhere.

Nitpick: it certainly is native, and so are said progeny. What it isn't
it indigenous.
