My father is partially sighted. He's NEVER had any trouble finding the door
on a train. Quite frankly anyone who needs the door in a garish colour to be
able to locate it is in severe danger of falling off the edge of the
platform. I can obviously only speak as someone related to someone partially
sighted, but I defy anyone to show me the true realistic need to destroy
good looking liveries in this way. God damn disability legislation gone
crazy.

WRONG!

Wrong Wrong Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's to comply with the disability regs.

The bright yellow strips on the right angle of the doors on HSTs are there
to assist sighting of doors that are not properly closed, the coloured doors
are purely for the disability regs, hence being on the MKIV trailers and
373s now as well....

And furthermore, I defy anyone to get on a Voyager or a Mk4 (or any
stock with swing-plug doors) through the door in the *open* position.
Now if the airspace in the doorway were painted different colour...

Regards

Jonathan

I'd love to meet one, just one partially sighted human being that has
honestly found the change very useful. Hell, make that even mildy useful.
Because so far...... I haven't.

If it honestly really were highly useful and desirable, there would no doubt
be legislation passed for every emergency exit in every building, every
aeroplane, every bus etc., to be in a contrasting colour. But no. This is
the country that shows people running on fire fire/emergency exit signs. The
exact thing that people shouldn't (usually) do. Someone, somewhere, really
needs to get a grip.

I have certainly met several people - including some fully sighted people -
who have found the contrasting colours useful.

It isn't to do with safety, particularly; just that if people can see where
the doors are they can move to the right place easily.

Much as I dislike the aesthetics, I have to admit that I have met people who
appreciate the colour difference. Apparantly the colour difference assists
in depth perception where people have partial sight in both eyes or full
sight in only one eye. We used partially sighted volunteers to also test the
different finishes/colours applied to coach interiors. At my local station
there are two guide dog users who have partial vision and they much prefer
the new liveried FGW stock to the older green stock for that reason.

And as such they are not only easier for those with disabilities, but
also for those with lots of shopping / luggage.
