I believe it is a special service shuttle only, with trains terminating
at MU H

Not quite the same thing I know but after the Bon Jovi concert earlier
in the year NO trains were provided from the h Fortunately a large
fleet of busses was hand to ferry people into the city center. | |

Given that Cardiff Central is only about 200 metres from the stadium, where
would you propose siting the halt?

After a lengthy exchange of emails with FNW Customer Relations, I
finally find that information on the specials to the ground is
available from National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950 -
except that NRE says that it is not. Not unless you tell them that
the CRS code is MUF; then they will happily tell you that trains leave
the ground at 2152, 2204, 2217, 2235, 2252, 2314 and 2324, taking
between 10 and 13 minutes to get to Piccadilly.
The first service from Piccadilly before the match is at 1659.
Manchester Piccadilly = MAN
Deansgate = DGT
Oxford Road = MCO

Does that mean that everyone gets a free ride to/from the match, since
ticket checks on the trams will presumably be impossible in such
conditions?

I am not a football supporter but do follow cricket.
Cricket might not generate such huge crowds.
But I recall queuing for my Metrolink ticket at Old Trafford
when the police ordered us onto the waiting tram
When it was impossible to get anyone else on we set off
on a free ride for the vast majority of passengers.
I now tend to travel Altrincham bound, but note that at peak times the
Manchester bound trams are held at the station until crammed full.
The tram may just as well travel then non-stop because there is no
chance of anyone boarding at intermediate stops. i.e. effectively
service is suspended Manchester bound at Trafford Bar, G-Mex etc.
