Is that always the case? I've travelled on the Holyhead-Dublin/Dun
Laoghaire ferry many times, and only once been stopped by an official on
arrival in the UK. I was asked if I could provide any ID... and
surprise, surprise, I was looking my scruffiest on that particular trip.

This can be sorted by treaty - e.g. Kent police have posts on the French
side of the tunnel and French police have posts on the English side.

It depends on which gate you arrive at. Ryanair and Aer Lingus flights
generally arrive at Pier A and you have to go through passport control
(although it may not always be staffed). Some other UK flights arrive
at Pier C and IIRC ground staff can route you so that you don't actually
have to go through passport control at all.
