The St Lazare experience is one to be avoided. The time required to
reach either le Harve or Cherbourg is more than that for St Pancras.
Portsmouth has pitiful and unhelpful bus services to the stations ( it
used to be a dedicated service but my last effort to find a bus
involved lying down in the road to stop one and ask -- even then the
driver did not know that his route passed within a short walk of the
terminal.) The rail fare is less than my toll + ferry + fuel cost
for my vehicle which now takes about 11 hours of travel each way and
is not good for a family weekend outing! If two of us were involved
it of course is much cheaper. The mid channel routes would also
involve over 12 hours of travel (15 hours at the worst case).
No thanks to the Satnav idea!

Granted, I can see that will be a problem. Although those not having cars or
not able to drive are in the minority these days. I know that some can't
drive cars for medical or other reasons beyond their control but you'd think
that those disqualified through something like drink driving would do more
to keep their license in the future due to the expensive poor service on the
trains they'd then have to use.
Why can't railcards be available for everyone as I'm excluded from them all?
Hence the use of a car instead of a train.
