Edinburgh explaining that from 30 March until 30 November they will be
routing flights over south west Edinburgh every night between 23.00
and 05.45. In summary the leaflet says
(a) BAA does not care what you think,
(b) BAA does care what DHL, TNT and the Royal Mail think,
(c) They did not feel there would be any point in holding a
consultation, so they didn't,
(d) There's no point complaining about the noise,
(e) They don't know how many flights are going to operate at night.
Just what you'd expect from BAA, eh?

Judging by last night's activity over my house (Morningside) they've started
early!

But they probably do care about the fact that safety regulations demand that
the main runway be resurfaced periodically. Important, wouldn't you say?

No doubt their pilots appreciate a safe runway too.

Not accurate. They did. One was held at South Morningside Primary, close to
where I live. There were others held across south and west Edinburgh. Did
you attend one?

It's your right to do so, should you feel inconvenienced, and BAA set up a
hotline to allow you to do this. Have you used it ... or just made a 'noise'
yourself on the internet?

I'm quite sure they do.

What's your point? Have you been pro-active in explaining whatever
inconvenience has been caused to yourself? Can you give examples?

But that isn't the point: passenger services will use the main runway
nearly all the time, and freight services, which will use the
secondary runway and fly over residential areas, could and should have
been re-timed. Users of night freight flights must have known about
the intended maintenance long before anyone bothered telling me about
them.
(b) BAA does care what DHL, TNT and the Royal Mail think,
> No doubt their pilots appreciate a safe runway too.
No doubt all their workers need to sleep at night. No doubt the pilots
would be happier working in daylight.
# (c) They did not feel there would be any point in holding a

There was no consultation. They were "information evenings." The
leaflet is quite clear: no consultation has been held, nor will be.
# (d) There's no point complaining about the noise,

There doesn't seem to be much point in complaining about a nuisance
that hasn't started. The leaflet makes clear that there will be no
prosecution for excessive noise unless the noise as reported in the
complaint matches the noise as recorded by BAA, and therefore there's
no point complaining. Even so, complaints have to be about excessive
noise from a particular aeroplane. There is no means to make a general
complaint of the form "BAA has no idea what an airport is for and
seems to think it is running a shopping arcade with runways," except
possibly making a fuss on the internet.
# (e) They don't know how many flights are going to operate at night.
> I'm quite sure they do.
The leaflet is, again, perfectly clear. You should read it. They don't
know how many flights are going to operate at night. They may well
know how many bottles of cheap whisky and packets of s they can
push in the departures lounge, but they don't know the number of night
flights, and they have said so.

Get a life you live next to an airport you have to get on with it and
i think most of these freighters are overnight deliveries
