| | Guest | Satnav device advice please. I have not got a home charger for my TomTom and will not have my computer
when away with the caravan. Once on site we use the car very little and we
always have a mains hook-up. In the caravan there is a 12 volt system and
I have a cigar lighter type adapter. I am not an expert on electrics but
cannot think of any reason why I should not plug the TomTom into this if I
want to 'play' with it in the caravan.
That is unless you know different.
Am I correct in my thinking?
Many thanks.

Unless you want to know if you are sitting in the front or back of the
caravan, I doubt that it will have any effect. It should memorize its last
known position so if it has been used in the car to get to where the
caravan is, it knows where it is!

Oh bugger! - why does everything on this group have to turn into an
argument?
I had Navigator 5 on an Acer PDA and it needed a live fix before you could
enter any destinations, or check routes, or view maps - or do anything with
it. 'Last position' never enabled the functions - it had to be a live
satellite link. | |

Hands up in the air! Only have experience of TomTom - turn it on and its
still where it was, until it gets a signal. Meantime it gives route info
from its old location to wherever you enter

See my other post on the thread re the mains/USB adaptor available for
£4.99. Works a treat!

Then someone can see the mount through the window and breaks into your car
to see if the actual device is in your glove box. :-) | |

Exactly! A friend of mine had her car broken into and ransacked... but
nothing stolen.
She said to the police attending that she couldn't understand why
they'd done it, to which he replied "because you have a sat nav
bracket on the windscreen, so they were looking for the unit"... which
of course she'd taken with her.

In the first place I do not have the thing mounted on the windscreen. In the
second I have both the unit and the mount behind the drivers seat hidden by
a rain jacket hung on a hook at the rear of the door pillar. You do not
really need to watch the unit as it gives verbal directions. So no unit in
view, no mount on view and no wee tell tale ring marks on the window.
