Are you in the UK? No one is 'allowed' to discharge toilet waste into the
canals and rivers, may still be allowed in some coastal ports though. Grey
water is generally allowed everywhere AFAIK

They don't 'allow' it - anyone doing so on BW or EA waters is commiting an
offence -see your licence conditions.

True in most places, for most boats.
Not quite true everywhere, though.
Certain types of boat on the Norfolk Broads are allowed to discharge
toilet waste overboard. This may sound awful, but pales into
insignificance against several villages whose sewage *still* goes into
the rivers.
Not so much 'mucking about in boats' as 'boating about in muck', as they
say.
Only swim in the Broads way upstream of any dodgy bits (that's most of
it).
Meanwhile, I am trying to work out how the sailing group I am involved
in can harmonise with the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme requirements, which
include candidates 'being confident swimming in the water with a
bouyancy aid'. :-)

It's easier to get the boatyard to do it: then their hose, not mine,
gets dirty. We successfully pumped it out one year after its last
discharge. All the contents were passed by the management.
