Don't see what difference it makes. If they want to nick something they
    will.

If you're really worried go to a camping shop and buy one of those mesh
    thingies that surround the pack.

I have often taken a rucksack as checked luggage and never had any
problems. Of course, I have never used it to carry any obvious
valuable. If a poor baggage handler is so desperate that he wants my
dirty underpants, I am happy for him to take them!

I am very tempted by the flight to Dinard and the chance to explore
the area: do have a good time, and report back on how things went.

The baggage for point-to-point lowcost airlines is handled so rapidly
that I don't believe there are many opportunities for theft by staff.
They are too busy just loading and unloading it. The major problems are,
I suspect, when interlined baggage spends hours being stored at transfer
airports - where there is even a requirement for bags to be examined for
    "security reasons".

Many airports have a kind-of clingfilm wrapping service, which does exactly
that to your luggage, somewhat discouranging pilfering. Don't know if
Stansted and/or Dinard have such a thing, though. Wish I'd done it on my way
back from Nairobi - I may still have had my SLR camera.
