Default Query on time to check in for Easyjet flight

My son is flying out of Gatwick this Sunday morning (3 August). Check-
in closes at 8.50; take-off is at 9.30.

How long is he likely to need to get from the railway station to the
check-in desk and complete the process? Would a train timetabled to
arrive at 8.18 be too late?

(Oh: he will have a bag to check in and so on-line check-in is not an
    option.)

IIRC, you can do 'on line check in' even if you have a bag.

I believe that Easyjet would have had a different opinion if this had
occurred... I'd have used an earlier train.

They used to have a "Fast bag drop" at Luton, but I couldn't see it last
time I was there. So whether anything is available at Gatwick would be
something to independently verify ahead of time.

Is the flight from the North or South terminal. I was very surprised to
find myself landing at a *very* distant part of the north terminal (the
part that's accessible only by the A380-sized bridge) a couple of months
ago. The additional time required to get to those gates (including the
inter-terminal shuttle) is about half an hour!

You might want to check which terminal the flight's from.

    >How long is he likely to need to get from the railway station to the
    >check-in desk

The railway station to the check-in area of the South terminal is about
    5 minutes.

    > and complete the process?

Easyjet's queue might be quite long.

I have also queued over an hour at security at Gatwick (March 2007, on a
Sunday afternoon). That was worse than normal because the baggage system
had literally "blown a fuse", and people had also been delayed checking
    in.

    >Would a train timetabled

Trains on a Sunday are almost always late, substituted by buses etc etc.

    >to arrive at 8.18 be too late?

I would reckon that 7.18 would be about right, as long as there's
nothing to upset the airport's flow. 8.18 is suicidal.

Thanks, but their website says very clearly that on-line check in is
only for passengers travelling with hand luggage only.

Hmm - the check in lady at MAN told me it was possible, but I didn't check.

If you are coming back from Geneva, they virtually insist you either do
online or Kiosk check-in, then use the fast bag drop. But these things
    vary from place to place.

EZY operate from both North and South terminals. There's a sign at the
railway station which says something like the North is EZY5xxx and the south
is EZY2xxx (those numbers are made up, but there's a way you can tell from
    the flight number).

If you're in North I'd leave an extra 10 minutes for the shuttle from the
South. The airbridge thing has North terminal gates 100-1xx - if you end up
there I suggest you need 20 mins walk from the lounge. I don't know if
there's a way you can find which gate your flight is likely to depart from -
check on the departure boards on the net a few times close to your departure?

So, what train did he take, and did he make it?
