Of course, one's individual mileage may vary. For example, when I last
flew Sky Europe about two years ago their planes were very old (and
grubby). And last year I flew on a BMI Baby that less than a week old!

I'm not quite sure which way round you mean that:

Are airlines using newer planes making more profit because they are
cheaper to run (less fuel and maintenance)?

Are airlines scrimping away with older planes making more profit because
the planes are cheaper to buy?

Are airlines that are making less profit unable to afford better planes,
and those making lots of profit squandering it on new planes?

Or something else...

Have you tried to buy a fleet of aircraft recently? Some of those airlines
obviously have and they wouldn't be able to if they were not making enough
profit to at least cover the loans.

I have no idea what your point is. Ryanair at one end seems to have
easily bought a fleet of new aircraft, and BMI Baby easily bought a
fleet of "surplus" aircraft. Which is making the most profit - how can
we tell?
