MAN - LHR
LHR - Miami
Need to get from Terminal 1 (landing at 08.10) to Terminal 3 (departing at
09.40)
I'm fairly certain (?) we'll have enough time to get from 1 to 3 in one and
a half hours, but will we have time for much else?
Breakfast maybe or just newspaper shopping???

Is this a through ticket, or two completely disjoint ones? And will you
be checking in for both in Manchester (and getting both sets of boarding
cards).

You won't have to go through Security at the Heathrow flight connections
centre but you will need to take an airside bus from there to T3. It should
take no more than 40 minutes in all. You should have time for breakfast upon
arrival in T3, but check your gate first as some are quite a distance from
the shopping area.

I travelled NCL-LHR-MIA on BA in early February and there were NO Security
checks at Heathrow going out. But, of course, there were on return.

That helps a lot as they will be expecting you, and any delay on the
inbound flight should be factored into the equation. And a checked bag
will mean they are reluctant to leave without you. If you are delayed,
or find huge queues for security en-route, it's always worth trying to
blag through "fast lanes" etc on the basis that otherwise you'll miss
the flight.
I would definitely not expect to have any spare time. Transatlantic
planes start boarding an hour before scheduled departure, and you will
be officially "late" by 09.20 (20 minutes ahead of departure time).
BA's website says of T1-T3 transfer:
"You will need 75 minutes to get to your flight on time"

Yep, I saw that, but presumably if they sold us the 'package', they ought to
be able to deliver the goods??

They must think the 75 minutes relates to the gap between scheduled
arrival and departure. Although this is somewhat ambiguous from the
website. What you should be confident of is that a delay in the inbound
flight resulting in you missing the connecting flight would be at their
risk, not yours.

We did GLA-LHR-MIA in February and it took us 20 mins from T1 to
T3--it was a Sunday morning however so that may have made a
difference. T3 was a zoo when we got there, hardly a seat to be had in
the lounge, people sleeping all over the place taking up at least
three seats!
We had several security checks on our return including twice being
finger-printed on our arrival at T3 and in transit to get into T1.
Travelling through LHR is a nightmare hopefully T5 will help but I am
not holding my breath :-)

The fingerprinting (once, really, the second is a check of the prints
taken the first time) is an inherent feature of domestic transfers at
T5; and in fact has only come into the public consciousness as a result
of publicity for T5.
On the other hand, there might be less walking around to do at T5, and
especially an end to T4/T1 transfers from BA to BA (something I always
thought was poorly designed, especially as my short-haul was at T4 and
the long haul at T1!!).
