I shouldn't worry about it. The miles seem to be worthless.

It costs me less to fly with Ryanair all charges added on, than
LH want in Tax (admittedly to/from more expensive airports)

I like to pay for cheap fares and use miles to upgrade but might be time to
switch to the low-costs.

With many airlines (eg Lufthansa) you cannot upgrade an economy ticket
purchased in the lowest booking class, and upgrading other economy
tickets costs more miles (a lot more!) than upgrading a full economy
(Y) ticket.

I recently investigated using miles to pay for a flight within Europe.
For Lufthansa, the cash payment (tax and 'charges') would have been
more than two-thirds of the total cost of the flight and paying with
money rather than miles. With KLM, the tax and charges would actually
have been MORE than the total cost of the flight (fare plus tax, etc.).

In sum, there seem to be very little point in collecting miles with
these carriers. Perhaps the only benefit is that if you acquire
'status' then you gain lounge access and a slightly improved chance of
operational upgrades. But it hardly seems worth the bother.
