ATSB only granted about 15% of the $10 billion in loan guarantees it was
authorized to dispense.

The airlines deserve their share of the blame, but the feds scalp about 24%
off the price of a typical airline ticket in taxes and fees. ("Sin taxes"
on alcohol and tobacco only run about 16%-18%.) They also have laid $4
billion a year in unfunded security costs on the airlines. This is in
addition to normal taxes like income tax, property taxes, etc.

Also, many airlines would have had operating profits except for $50/barrel
oil prices. Even JetBlue is struggling now.

The terms of the deal may be different, but government rescue of
corporations is still government rescue of corporations. It is the same
situation: Unwise interference with the marketplace. The fine print
doesn't matter.

In the words of the immortal Sen. Seabright Cooley, I'm "unalterably
opposed, sir" to the whole idea.

Apologies to Alan Drury.

It was the best I could do. The straight line just didn't have any pizzazz
to it.

I can only do so much with this kind of material.

I'm sorry, I missed that earlier.

Did you really mean to say that?

Tell me you didn't.

I think what he meant to say was - Congress' job is to try to keep the U.S.
a nice place to live for Congressmen.
