Yes, there are many interesting ways to do this journey by surface --
bus or hovercraft as well as train. And flights on that route are
absurdly over-priced. Having said that, I have used China Southern
several times (on different routes) and they are perfectly acceptable
-- you can even earn miles on them for KLM/NW. I have never used
Dragonair, but they are linked to Cathay Pacific and so are likely to
be pretty good.
