Default Get Gold frequent flyer status on Star Alliance for free!

If you are Gold or Silver status in ANY frequent flyer (*) program e.g.

British Airways / Oneworld
Air France / Sky team
KLM
etc. etc.

then you can qualify for the same status on the Star Alliance program for
free!

And if you fly on Star alliance before mid May you get an extra 5000 bonus
miles!

Just send me an email for the terms and conditions (the major one being you
must be UK resident.) Indicate whether you want to apply for Asiana, British
Midland (BMI) or Thai Airways

sa66@pennybags.com

(*) You cannot use Gold/Silver status in one Star Alliance program to
qualify for another.

In the past these "comp" offers have sometimes been once in a lifetime
deals, i.e. I doubt that any airline would match status multiple years
in a row.

According to Star Alliance, Silver status does not allow access to lounges
and most member airlines status pages align with this. However, BMI Silver
does allow access to lounges? Surley it would, therefore be better for
someone like myself with One World Silver/Saphire status, joining the BMI
program. The other benefits do not seem that great at Silver Level on other
Star partners. Or am I wrong. Has anyone compared One World status
benefits to Star Benefits. I suppose, however, I should not look a gift
horse in the mouth.

I think most airlines only allow *Silver members into their own
lounges and normally only let them use their own Business-class
check-in. I believe no lounges are designated as accessible to
*Silver. Star Alliance Silver Status is more similar to OneWorld Ruby
(e.g. AA Gold).

If you have One World Sapphire status you should try to get comped to
Star Gold (e.g. possibly one of the middle tiers like UA PremEx). If
you are lucky you might even get the top tier in one of the two tier
programmes (e.g. LH Senator).

Nope the idea off FF status is to keep those who use a carrier already (i.e.
to make you want to use them next year, not as a reward for using them last
year - a subtle difference), as well as trying to attract those who use
other carriers currently.

I doubt it's *quite* the same status. Apparently[1], I am "Platinum
for Life[2]" with AA , and (even if this I qualified for this program
by being a UK resident) I doubts I'd become Star Alliance
Gold-for-life.

And looking at the Star Alliance website, I have to say that after all
these years they aren't terribly impressive ("Coming Soon!")...

Malc.

[1] I say apparently, because the link that Toe published yesterday
says 2,000,000 miles = Platinum for Life[2], but I never got a letter
from Mike Gunn of AA about the 2,000,000 mile mark (which I thought a
bit cheap) although I did get bag tags, etc. saying "2 Million Miles".
I knew I was Gold for Life[2] from the 1,000,000 mile mark...

[2] Life of the Program, not my life or the airline's life!

Star Silver = OneWorld Ruby...

Yes, but in general the benefits that are more relevant are the "home"
airline's benefits. For me, Star vs. OneWorld means AA vs. UA (and a
touch of AC). That's no contest: AA's program is far better *for me*
than United's.

[ In particular, UA limits the fares on which you can upgrade with
miles, AA doesn't! ]

There was a survey late last year to UK SA members that specifically asked
if you had status with any other airlines, how often you flew etc etc (I got
2000 miles for answering it twice).

So I think they have a pretty accurate idea of how many people will qualify,
and how much more traffic it will put through their lounges.

I was sort of hoping it was personalised to those who had flown a reasonable
number of times on SA but missed status (I got about 60% of the way to
status on SA in 2003). But I guess it went to everyone.

Unless it has changed in the last month.... I have always got in the LH
lounge at LHR, once used the SAS lounge at STN and when I tried to
sneak into the Austrian lounge at VIE when I wasn't travelling Star Alliance
I was told that I would have been let in if I was flying LH or Austrian.
(I always have economy tickets BTW).

I am however somewhat bemused as to why they have sent me two lounge
access vouchers. If they really aren't going to let me in the lounge in future
then there is no point them sending me the card, I don't consider any of
the other benefits as worth having.
