Some new meaning of the words "without reasonable excuse", then? Sounds
to me like he explained what his excuse was.

But was it reasonable ?

It made me remember an incident when I went through Gatwick with a medium
sized penknife in my handluggage (I had honestly forgotten it was there),
they gave me a mild telling off and let me through with it - Long before
11/9/2001.

Plausible, at least.

Oddly enough, the same happened to me with a swiss army knife . . .
but at ATH last July!

I think that's true of almost everyone's bags. They will typically have
dark corners, recesses and pockets that no-one will check and re-check
every five minutes.

That's true enough, but a vague awareness might be good, especially if the
guy owns eweapons etc.

I agree 100%.

One would hope/expect that the secuirty services have there own testers who
try and get things through - they of course would be properly screened and
exempt from prosecution.

You misunderstand me. The swiss army knife in question is currently
in the cutlery drawer in the kitchen!

I think the fact that a hefty six foot three security supervisor
couldn't get the blade out because it was well stiffened up with
dust, sand and salt water meant they thought it was safe . . .
pity about the fact that it was in the same rucksack as enough
sun cream to create a small oil slick.
