Default penknife - hold ok?

Can I take my swiss army knife abroad if I leave it in my check in luggage?
Do I have to declare that it's there if I can?

Thanks.

I always mention at checkin that I have a razor in my carryon (I rarely
travel with checked baggage), and it has never been a problem.
