I don't know about the UK, but gate checking in the US would make you
lose some of the legal protections you get from the normal checking of a
bag.

As a safety measure, I'd suggest they contact the hotel in Orlando and
discuss with them means to steam, press and/or iron the dress and suit
once they get there. Of course, no dressmaker I've yet come across
will ever admit that anyone could possibly do any job as well as them!

Anyway, if they have contingency plans, then if the thing *does* have
to travel in the hold, they're covered, plus (of course) there's no
guarantee that something won't end up on top of it even if it does
travel in the cabin -- I'm sure people will try to avoid that, but it
doesn't always happen, and it's unreasonable to demand that it doesn't
(it's not everyone's wedding, after all!)

An afterthought - I am 99 % certain that Virgin have a special group checkin
desk - I dont know if there is a limit on how small a group is - but might
be worth a phone call - or just try it when checking in.

You did that very well if I may say so. ;-)

Kind Regards, Howard

To the OP: have you looked at the Virgin website? When I last looked
at it, about a year ago, there was a specific discussion about the
wedding dress issue. The stated policy was (IIRC) that, subject to
space being available, FAs would hang the dress in the closet in the
FC cabin. However, there was no guarantee that this would always be
possible.

That's the flip side of this whole thing: there's no way a wedding
dress is going to displace (say) my camera case into the hold...
