Out of curiousity - when the US passport with the indefinite leave stamp
expires - will she try to/is it possible to have a replacement stamp in the
new US passport? I've never had to deal with this - my kids and I are dual
US/UK citizens by birth, not naturalisation, but it may be an issue for
another relative in the future.

Yes, the UK immigration people will transfer the stamp next time you
enter the UK (with both passports, of course).

You've moved the goal-posts with the issue about change of name. What I
know is that if the only thing to be done is move the permanent resident
stamp from an expired US passport to a new US passport, then I've seen
that done at the immigration desk. If the husband with UK passport is
there at the same time, it might help, but I can't see why it would be
strictly necessary. You might try asking if the stamp could be
transferred that way if you are both there and also have your marriage
certificate. It would probably have helped if the lady had asked the US
authority to change the name on her old US passport before it expired.
Then there'd not be a problem. That's the sort of thing the US Embassy
in London used to do "while you wait", but they have new procedures
recently.

You seem unwilling to go to Croydon and get it done on the spot. You
also seem to think that arriving at immigration with a convincing story
won't work either. Surely having the (first) US passport clearly changed
from the maiden to married name could only help?
