Personally, my baggage nightmare is all photographic equipment, props,
backdrops, and so on.
The cameras (and usually all the lenses) travel in the cabin -- not
because they're particularly fragile in their case(s), but because if
they go missing, it's an expensive nuisance to replace them (insurance
notwithstanding).

I can see that you and I frequent very different types of clothes
shop ;-)
It's very easy to have a couple of thousand pounds worth of
clothes, shoes and makeup in your checked luggage if you're
planning on going out somewhere nice for dinner or have a
suit packed!

And there is more to life than T-shirts and jeans. This subthread
got started because someone expressed the desire not to own suits
and to eschew fancy reastaurants. What I suggest is to embrace the
entire range equally and enthusiastically.

heh. I'm thinking more sarongs and longyis.

And my point is that the desire to not wear suits hardly fits into a
"one size fits all kind of world." Not even close.

On which carrier(s)?
AA only cares about wet cell batteries (which are prohibited). They
are quite happy with my stash of AA-sized (!) NiMH batteries in the
checked baggage, as were QF, JL, and CX, and CO! The latter group
have also dealt with large battery-powered strobes for underwater
use...
