People's requirements from an airline do vary a lot. Some do want that
cheap flight, and aren't too bothered when delays happen; at other times
you just want to get from A to B reliably. Depending on whether the
route you are flying has a lot of different carriers, you might or might
not have the choice of a non-budget airline when you need that second
scenario. Living as I do halfway between Stansted and Luton, it can be
quite difficult getting a non-budget flight at all, to several European
destinations (unless I first travel to Heathrow).
On the other hand, the money is normally the least of my problems. I've
had two very bad airline experiences recently [1], and the disruption
caused was far worse than any money itself could compensate. And that
was after choosing "proper" airlines, rather than cheaper charters.
[1] A scheduled trip business from Rhodes that was delayed a day due to
ATC strike; and BA being 4.5 hours late back from the USA causing me to
miss connections to Brussels.
