how to put tape on a triathlon handle bar

I just got my first triathlon bar, and put the tape myself.
I realize I must have done it wrong , I put the tape from the end of
the handle bar down toward the fork.
It seems I should have done it the other direction instead. The reason
why I did this in the first place is because I wanted to end with the
"closing tape" (the smooth tape), and did not want to have this
"closing" tape by the shifter or the brakes.

Also I bought some handle bar tape which was Fizik
and it doesn't have much glue track at all, any better recommendation?
