Swim split pace

Can anyone tell me where they come up with the pace after the actual time
for a quarter mile swim in a sprint tri? My time was 8:44, with a pace of
1:59. I can't figure out what this means-it doesn't extrapolate out to a
mile, to 2.4 miles... What am I missing?
