I am new to the triathlon world. My first Sprint triathlon is coming
up in 2 1/2 months! 500m swim, 17 mile bike, 5K run.
My background is being a swimmer since age 6. I graduated college last
year and decided I needed to do something new. I was a sprinter all my
life and to train for this endurance stuff has been crazy! But, I am
trying.
Now, my dilema:
Swimming, no problem, work-out 3-4 days a week. Endurance has gotten a
lot better.
Running, has gotten better, can run 3 miles in about 32 minutes. Still
working on dropping the weight to improve my time to about 25 minutes
(avg. 8.5 min mile)
Biking -PROBLEM....I have only worked out on a stationary bike. The
distance I need to travel is 17 miles. I have done it on a stationary
bike, and only tackled the open road for one week due to the fact that
I did not own a road bike until now. I just bought it, and am
experiencing the road with wind, turns, hills, and other obstacles.
I can complete the 17 miles, but I am usually dead by the end and feel
like I would never be able to complete the run. Plus I feel like I
should be going a lot faster. Is there anything else I can do to help
me pick up time in my biking. I ride on a Specialized Dolce. I ride
about 3 days a week, and usually bike the 17 miles. I am looking for
any type of workout other than straight riding for the 17 miles.
Should I sprint some? Need any help possible!
Thanks for any advice! | |

some time fast you might want to try riding the pace you want for as far
as you can and then finishing the 17 miles, slowly building until you
can do the 17 miles at race pace

the 17 miles and what was the course like. How much elevation gain etc.
17 miles should be very easy at a moderate pace. It could leave you totally
spent at an extreme effort no matter your fitness/experience level.
Knowing route conditions and your time would indicate your level.

I have been riding a stationary bike since November and riding on the
road for one week. I'm from Erie, PA and I usually ride around our
peninsula which is 13 miles and continue until 17 miles. The road is a
little windy from the beaches and has some slight hills. The 17 miles
usually takes me a little over an hour. I would like to get that time
to about 45 minutes. Does this seem reasonable?
