Default hotel room canellation fee

Can anyone tell me if hotels can enforce a cancellation fee? I can see
where a fee may be proper if cancelling at the last minute but exacting a
fee (the full cost of the room plus taxes) if the reservation is cancelled
within 30 days seems unreasonable.

Yes they can.
1. They can do so if yu did accept it, because then you have a
contract with the hotel.
2. In Germany (p.e.) this went already to the court and the hotel won
- but if you booked bed and breakfast you get a reduction of 20% and a
reservation with half or full board there should be a reduction of
40%.

Perhaps you should read better the contract you are signing.

Well, depending which tax, the hotel has to pay the tax (p.e. VAT), so
it will be part of your payment.

And what would you say if the hotel is cancelling your reservation?
Would you accept it, or would you complain then about the bad hotel
which did cancel your reservation?
Sorry, but a hotel is not only hospitality, but also a company.
Both sides has rights, not only the guest side.

Greetings from Cologne

Andreas
